Sports Premium Grant:

The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - will be allocated to primary school headteachers. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Eligible schools

Funding for schools will be calculated by reference to the number of primary-aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11), as recorded in the annual schools census in January of each year.

Allocations for the academic year 2017 to 2018 are calculated using the number of pupils in years 1 to 6, as recorded in the January 2017 census, as follows:

schools with 17 or more pupils receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil
schools with 16 or fewer pupils receive £1000 per pupil

Purpose of funding

The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils, in the 2017 to 2018 academic year, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. Information on how much PE and sport premium funding primary schools receive and advice on how to spend it has been published.

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. Possible uses for the funding might include:

hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools.

Accountability

Schools are held to account over how they spend their additional, ring-fenced funding. Ofsted will strengthen the coverage of PE and sport within the 'Inspectors’ handbook' and supporting guidance so that both schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision.

Schools will also be required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website, alongside details of their broader curriculum, so that parents can compare sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day.

At Meadows First School we intend to use our Sports Premium Grant to assist us with achieving self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools against the 5 key indicators:

The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles.
The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.
Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
Increased participation in competitive sport.

Our aims to develop PE over the next 3 years include:

To develop gross motor skills (both) in our very youngest children as we observe that children are entering school with ever decreasing gross and fine motor skills.
To continue to upskill staff by providing opportunities for them to teach alongside specialist sports coaches in sports that are requested by children or that staff have less confidence in delivering.
To provide existing staff with resources to help them teach new PE and sport content more effectively, as well as maintaining and replacing existing equipment as necessary
To support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports and clubs.
To develop staff knowledge of wellbeing activities as part of developing awareness of healthy lifestyles
To develop pupil participation in out of school sport
To increase participation in competitive sport
