British Values

The Government set out their definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. The Department for Education have reinforced the need; 'To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs'.
British Values: What are they?
How do we promote British Values at Meadows?
At Meadows First School, we promote fundamental British values—democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance—through our ethos, curriculum, and behaviour policy, alongside our work as a UNICEF Rights Respecting School. These values are closely linked to children’s rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, including the right to express views and be heard (Article 12), the right to freedom of thought and belief (Article 14), and the right to be treated fairly and without discrimination (Article 2). By embedding these principles, we prepare pupils to be respectful, responsible citizens in a diverse society.
