The Den

The Den is a mainstream autism base (MAB) offering a flexible approach to the curriculum. It supports pupils from Meadows First School and Parkside Middle School and is led by a specialist teacher and six teaching assistants who work closely with families to ensure students feel safe and secure each day—upholding their right to protection and care (Article 19) and the right to education (Article 28).

Both schools view autism as a difference rather than a deficit and embrace diversity within classrooms—supporting every child’s right to non-discrimination and identity (Articles 2 and 8). Provision is tailored to meet individual needs, respecting the right to education that develops talents and abilities (Article 29).

In addition to the National Curriculum, The Den offers a therapeutic curriculum to support social, emotional, and communication needs. Sessions include Lego Therapy, Drawing and Talking Therapy, Emotional Literacy (ELSA), Thrive, Speech and Language Therapy, and autism curriculum lessons—promoting the right to health and wellbeing (Article 24) and the right to express views and feelings (Article 13). Students also engage with the local community and attend trips, supporting their right to participate in cultural and social life (Article 31).

Our aim is to prepare students to participate in mainstream education as much as possible, ensuring their right to inclusive education (Article 23) and empowering them for the next stage of learning (Article 29).

Places at The Den are offered following consultation with the Local Authority. Students accessing The Den will have an ASD diagnosis and an EHCP in place—upholding their right to special support for additional needs (Article 23).
